The Chemical Weapons Convention

How the Government Chemist serves as Kenya's National Authority for the CWC.

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is the international treaty that prohibits the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons. It is implemented by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

When Kenya ratified the Convention, the Government designated the Government Chemist as the National Authority: Kenya's focal point for meeting its obligations and its representative in international fora of States Parties.

What the National Authority does

  • Coordinates and implements national obligations on chemical safety and security under the OPCW;
  • Works for compliance across industries that handle scheduled and toxic chemicals;
  • Implements United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540;
  • Supports broader chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) non-proliferation regimes.
